For the 4th year in a row, the sixth grade class from Doulos Discovery School ventured to the coral reef at Playa Fronton off the Samana peninsula. With marine biologist Dr. Rubén Torres and his team from Reef Check International, our students learned how a coral reef is built and maintained in nature. We also learned what is destroying the reefs worldwide and how we can be advocates of this beautiful part of creation.
Doulos is the only school in the Dominican Republic dedicated to empowering our students to study and care for the environment in real and practical ways. Doulos is also the only school in the DR that is partnered with Reef Check and we desire that more schools get involved. Part of this past week's project was filming the classes on the reef as well as student feedback on what they've learned. This will be turned into an informational video for schools all over the country to see how their students can partner with Reef Check, too.
It is an honor for our students each year to spend a week on the pristine white sand beaches (made from coral, of course) and catch glimpses into the magnitude of God's great creation. We are also deeply thankful for Ruben and his staff for thier commitment and investment in our students.
Thank you, Reef Check!
